 Drums are among the most significant instruments in the history of music, used in religious rituals, tribal dances, military and court ceremonies, and as signalling devices. 
In an orchestra, the most obvious drums would be the bass drum and the snare drums, also known as "side drums" because marching drummers play them at an angle.
